Medical Devices & Diagnostics Global Services, LLC., a member of Johnson and Johnson's Family of Companies, is hiring a Staff Engineer –Electromechanical (eLeM) & Consumable, Disposable and Devices (CDD) to be located in either Irvine, CA, Irwindale, CA or Diamond Bar, CA or another J&J operating company location .
Medical Devices & Diagnostics Global Services, LLC., represents more than 60 manufacturing sites and 26,000 employees who plan, source, manufacture and deliver high-quality and cost-effective medical products to our customers around the globe each day. Work of the MD&D SC supports a multitude of product platforms, new products and delivery systems that are used in a wide range of procedures throughout the healthcare industry, including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, minimally invasive surgery, hospital sterilization, clinical laboratory testing, diabetes management, joint replacement surgery and vision care.
The Staff Engineer will report to the Program Manager - Partner Development, the Staff Engineer – Electromechanical (eLeM) and Consumable, Disposable and Devices (CDD) is responsible for providing expert technical / business / project leadership to the Global Procurement organization in area of electromechanical technology roadmap and various manufacturing processes.
The Role of the Staff Engineer will encompass a broad engineering knowledge of various processing operations (such as electromechanical assembly, plastics molding/extrusions and metal fabrication, etc.), and must demonstrate a strong understanding of engineering theoretical fundamentals and experimental techniques. The Staff Engineer will work on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. Innovative and pragmatic solutions will be developed to a wide range of problems. He/she will exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selected methods and techniques to obtain the desired results. Typical projects will have a significant impact to the franchise and category management business plan. This position requires the wide application of principles, theories and concepts in the plastics and plastics engineering fields plus a working knowledge of other related disciplines and manufacturing processes. Scope of responsibilities will encompass multiple franchise product portfolios and a global network of external partners supporting over $3.7B in spend. Other responsibilities may be assigned & not all responsibilities listed may be assigned.
The Staff Engineer will be the manufacturing technical expert for the Global Procurement organization, they will be responsible for process and product knowledge acquisition to execute productivity improvement projects on yields and process efficiencies, and in conjunction with franchise resources provide sustaining engineering support on products during the entire life cycle. The Staff Engineer will own the overall responsibility and technical oversight for the planning, organizing, execution, and coordination of continuous improvement projects at key, strategic plastics suppliers. The Staff Engineer will lead projects, which may involve supervision (permanent or temporary) of technical personnel, to execute validations, troubleshooting efforts, or operational efficiency improvements. The Staff Engineer will advise teams on issues related to product design, validation requirements, appropriate test methods and manufacturing methods to meet quality, cost, and release to market objectives.
The Staff Engineer will be responsible for evaluating technical and regulatory requirements against business needs in development and maintenance of corporate level policies, procedures, and strategies impacting all MD&D plastics suppliers and contract manufacturers. The Staff Engineer will develop and implement sector-wide electromechanical and other processing related validation policies and procedures. Lead company teams to accomplish integration activities for proposed changes.
The Staff Engineer will trouble-shoot significant manufacturing process deviations and develop short and long-term solutions to prevent re-occurrence and advises quality partners on technical questions. The Staff Engineer will perform technical assessments of suppliers and external manufacturers related to electromechanical and general manufacturing processes. The Staff Engineer will identify and provide solutions to close compliance gaps and improve overall quality performance.
The Staff Engineer role will be the Worldwide liaison with individuals and units within and outside the Global Procurement organization with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to his/her field. Close coordination with franchise operations teams is a critical. In conjunction with franchise resources, will act as a secondary point of contact (issue escalation) and technical expert on any electromechanical and general processing issues at a supplier when the local plant (internal) engineering team cannot resolve an issue. Supervision is essentially administrative with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits. The Staff Engineer keeps abreast of new methods and development affecting his/her organization for the purpose of recommending changes in emphasis of programs.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science or Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent Technical discipline is required. A Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science or Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent Technical discipline is preferred. A Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science or Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent Technical discipline is a plus. A minimum of 7 years direct experience in general manufacturing processes is required. Experience in general quality systems, change management and project management skills required.
Candidate should have the ability to be effective in a global environment with the ability to manage and lead technical issues with global partners. Candidate should have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely across all levels of the company, across the MD&D supply chain, and with the commercial franchises as appropriate. A strong understanding of the process excellence tool set (LEAN, Six Sigma) with a proven track record of deploying these tools to improve operational performance is an asset. A Certification in LEAN and/or Six Sigma is an asset. Candidate should have in depth knowledge of plastics manufacturing systems and processes, including GMP requirements for medical devices. Candidate should have the ability to lead and influence others in a complex matrix organization. Organization & Talent Development with the ability to mentor and train junior engineers is required
Primary location can be in California or another J&J operating company location. Up to 50% domestic travel.
