1. Job Purpose:
The primary purpose of the DePuy (Ireland) R&D group manager role is to work in collaboration with DePuy (Ireland) Management Board and the Joints R&D leadership team to identify and oversee the alignment and execution of relevant business imperatives, R&D projects, technology development and improvement initiatives, with a particular focus on projects and initiatives for which DePuy (Ireland) have IP and technology development responsibility.
2. Principle Accountabilities:
Responsibilities listed below do not represent the full scope of duties and responsibilities, but aims to be representative of the fundamentals expected of the DePuy (Ireland) R&D Group Manager position
All work will be carried out in accordance with company policies and procedures:
Budgetary Responsibility:
o Collaborate with key R&D, Operational and Financial stakeholders in the Joints Operating Companies and DePuy (Ireland) to determine R&D business needs in order to develop appropriate fiscal budgets in line with company annual business planning process
o Provide management oversight and senior level approval for significant capital and revenue spend in line with established J&J/DePuy finance controls and accountability
o Facilitate quarterly reviews of expenditure against DePuy (Ireland)’s R&D budget as it relates to sub-contract service provision from R&D groups based in Leeds (UK), Warsaw (US), Suzhou (China) and India.
o Track and report progress and deviations against planned spend and align business stakeholders to agree adjustments where needed.
o Responsible for both revenue and capital expenditure relating to Joints R&D activity in EMEA
o Budget responsibility for operational Continuous Improvement Program (CIP) expenditure
Sales & Operational Planning (S&OP):
o R&D representative on S&OP governance team
o Ensure that operational roll out plans are aligned with NPD project plans through participation in `WW Portfolio Review Meetings` and `Project Execution Reviews`
o Provide R&D bridge between operations and R&D for projects in manufacturing transfer
o Ensure that S&OP challenges and requirements are adequately represented and accommodated in R&D Portfolio and Project review forums
Continuous Improvement Program Management (CIP):
Working in close collaboration with the WW Group Manager CPD:
o Program manage the delivery of the CIP projects portfolio
o Collaborate with Operational, QA, R&D and Regulatory leaders and stakeholders to facilitate the identification, justification and approval of new project proposals
o Manage the day to day priorities and focus of CIP resources to ensure execution to agreed plans
o Facilitate and chair the CIP governance review meetings to decide on the inclusion of new projects, adjustment in priorities and review progress
o Facilitate and chair program execution review meetings
o Manage the identification , justification and delivery of Value Engineering sub program and ensure alignment with relevant cross functional stakeholders
o Ensure that operational savings are verified in project proposals, captured in business plans and validated upon execution
WW NPD Portfolio Management
o Represent the DePuy (Ireland) engineering leadership team to review and approve new project and technology development proposals as a voting member of the WW Portfolio Review Team
o Ensure that projects are suitably aligned to advanced engineering and operational business and strategic plans for DePuy (Ireland) and Global Supply Chain
NPD PACE Stage Gate Reviews
o Participate in monthly NPD Pace Stage Gate reviews that include a review of progress of R&D projects against milestones and stage gates
WW Joints R&D Leadership
o Shape and align R&D strategy and direction by providing direct input from the DePuy (Ireland) Management Board regarding:
o Operational & GSC Strategy and initiatives
o Quality & Compliance initiatives and support requirements
o R&D representation on the S&OP governance team
o Emerging manufacturing technologies and capabilities being developed through Advanced Engineering Group in DePuy (Ireland)
o Lead or participate in generic R&D assignments as required
Product Portfolio Management:
Represent WW R&D on cross functional teams responsible for periodic commercial/strategic decisions to discontinue and obsolete existing products. Ensure that:
o R&D implications of product discontinuation are fully evaluated and understood. Ensure that generic products needed in other product lines are identified
o Continued care replacement part needs are adequately provisioned via co-ordination with the Continued Care and Customs group in Leeds
o Affected products are formally obsoleted via co-ordination with the WW CPD Group
EMEA Patent Review Board:
o Participate on the EMEA patent review board to evaluate new invention disclosures and determine whether to file or not
o Facilitate the identification and submission of invention disclosures form DePuy (Ireland) operational and advanced engineering group
o Provide inputs to decision regarding IP ownership site and patent estate management
o Ensure that decisions regarding IP estate in DePuy (Ireland) are incorporated within the business, financial and tax planning strategies
Engineering Systems Support: : Provide Engineering Systems deployment support locally in Cork which may include
o Technology infrastructure deployment (CAD/CAE/PDM etc)
o Procedural development and deployment, including provision of local training
o Local solicitation and feedback for continuous improvement
o Provide primary R&D management representation in support of quality and regulatory audits conducted in Cork
New Technologies Review Board (NTRB)
o Chair, lead and administer the NTRB process to develop and agreed portfolio of novel, differentiated technologies
o Ensure that cross functional and business stakeholders are aligned to new technologies development portfolio
o Ensure that projects remain aligned to business and product needs, through effective gate reviews and that kill or continue decisions are made at the appropriate time
o Establish clear success criteria for each project and a smooth transition through to NPD and Operational scale up
