Codman/DePuy Synthes is currently recruiting for a Director of R&D for their Raynham, Ma. Facility.

Codman Neuro is the Neurological business focused on neurosurgery, neurovascular and neuromodulation, offering a broad portfolio of solutions including programmable shunt systems, catheters, trauma monitoring devices, drug pumps, neurovascular coils, liquid embolics and vascular reconstruction devices.

The purpose of this job is to provide leadership and overall direction to the Product Development, and innovation teams, in support of the Codman Neuro Neurosurgery Device Innovation and Development platforms.

This position is responsible for the analysis, design, development, testing, documentation, and support of all products. This includes technical leadership, clinical and evidence generation partnerships, data collection/communication strategies & implementation, data analysis/reporting systems, Quality Assurance collaboration, and implementation/process tools. This also includes technology strategic direction, commercial support, budgets, reporting, staffing, performance management, development plans, recruiting, mentoring, coaching, and other human resources related activities.

This position works in collaboration with the other franchise R&D departments and franchise Operations, Quality Assurance, IT, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Operations, Finance, Medical Affairs, and other cross business unit stakeholders including Sales/Marketing to ensure that the product supports customer needs and business commitments.

This position is a member of the Codman Neuro R&D Leadership Team.

Strategic Direction

Works with key stakeholders to understand business requirements and expectations in order to develop direction for the Sustaining Engineering & Base Business support Product Development activities.

Maintains knowledge of current and emerging trends in the industry, including all relevant areas of medical device development that might be incorporated as new technologies into future prodcuts.

Collaborates with sales, marketing, operations, strategic marketing, in-line product marketing, business development and other departments to determine competitiveness of new technologies and to develop new products.

Develop and oversee overall test strategy and tactical plans for quality assurance compliance.

Establishes direction, goals and processes for each part of the Product Development and innovation teams.

Provides input and direction to designers providing information on risk assessment analysis, product requirements, program planning, etc..

Collaborates with third party vendors to ensure that the vendor's strategic direction is in alignment with the organization's direction.

Communicates current and future statuses as it relates to current and future projects and direction related to these projects.

Negotiates and oversees third party arrangements with consulting companies and vendors.

Provide an environment that fosters product innovation and development to meet and exceed customer expectations.

Work with product management and new business development to build and enhance the appropriate products for the business in a timely and efficient manner.

Communicates current and future statuses as it relates to current and future projects and direction related to these projects.

Attend presentation with third party vendors to understand new technology.

Leadership of the Product Development Team

Participate in the hiring of the Product Development staff.

Develop appropriate performance review objectives; provide day-to-day coaching with the management team; and conduct annual performance reviews.

Resolves employee relations issues as needed.

Determine what resources are necessary to carry out development projects.

Assist designated team leads in overall process of product development and provide mentoring for all levels of team members.

Communicates and interprets organizations policies.

Assist designated team leads in meeting R&D deliverables.

Attend product design meetings and assist in the planning and decision making process.

Review and investigate root cause of high priority problem issues; implement processes to reduce the risk of similar issues in the future.

Escalation point for production support issues - investigate, understand, assist in the decision making process, etc..

Project Management

Assist in determining what resources are necessary to carry out development projects.

Develop and monitor quality goals for each product release.

Communicate current and future status as it relates to current and future projects and direction related to each project.

Sales Support

Budget

Develop and monitor third party vendor budgets (contracts).

Develop, monitor, and develop reports for Product Development, Product Development and innovation teams (expenses).

Qualifications


This position will require a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 10 years’ experience working in industry. If you have an advanced degree it will be a big plus for this position. Experience working in an Engineering environment related to biomedical products is required for this position. It will be an asset if you have experience working with neuro vascular product development.

Strong Project management skills are required along with the ability to collaborate with other functions in a Cross Functional Team Environment.

This position will require the ability and experience to develop individuals within the organization. Helping them meet their goals and achieve their full potential.

A strong business acumen is important in this role including the ability to handle fiscal budget responsibilities. It is also required to be able to work with other leaders to help take the organization to its next level. Having a solid grasp of what is happening in the industry to help the organization stay on the cutting edge of technology is also required for this position.
