BACKGROUND OF POSITION & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Head of Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing Sciences, China is a key member of the China R&D and PDMS Asia Pacific leadership teams driving strategy and growth in innovation R&D in China. The incumbent will be responsible for the “End-to-End” R&D process of new drug development, primarily consisting of API development, Drug Product Development, Analytical Development and Clinical Supply Chain, both for biologics as well as small molecules NMEs (besides OTC support in China).

Significant progress has been made in defining the strategy for the CMC development of new products in China, in support of the China-for-China product portfolio and the NME pipeline of the five Therapeutic Areas (TAs) within Janssen R&D. Further implementation and execution of the strategy resulting in new product launches will represent important future growth to J&J’s Strategic Plan. More importantly, bringing J&J’s breakthrough medicines to patients in China and around the world will have a great impact on their lives as well as public health. Additionally, bringing the talent and scientific expertise from China to J&J’s global research efforts will help advance medicine around the world.

Key accountabilities:
The key accountabilities for this role include:
•Daily oversight (administrative & operational) of the China PDMS activities which include API Development, Analytical Development, Drug Product Development and Clinical Supply Chain in biologics and small molecules;
•Develop, lead and execute the overall CMC strategy for research and development from exploratory development through to new drug approval in alignment with China R&D’s and PDMS’s strategic plan;
•Establish and shape a clear vision of the research and development operating model to support new business strategy based on commitment to making a difference for patients, scientific rigor, commitment to quality and high performance;
•Collaborate and partner with colleagues from the China R&D, global PDMS and Janssen R&D organizations in the achievement of goals and objectives;
•Expand the on-going activity by building and strengthening strategic partnerships with external parties in China; aligned with the overall PDMS sourcing strategy, build a strong virtual environment, capacity and capability wise, to deliver on the portfolio;
•Focus on developing organizational capability and identifying and developing talent in the organization.

Qualifications


•Candidates must either be PhD or MS qualified in biological, chemical, pharmaceutical, engineering science or related field; a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry in:

o primarily biologics (large molecules)

o preferably small molecules as well;

•With at least 10 years of senior management experience in innovation R&D, the ideal candidate should possess deep scientific knowledge of pharmaceutical R&D coupled with business acumen, including ability to engage with key opinion leaders in the R&D industry, regulators and Therapeutic Area heads;

•Evidence of long-term commitment to excellence in science, high ethics, quality output and business results; the individual has obtained relevant experience in China, and has also had international exposure to an array of development companies and/or manufacturing sites;

•Candidate must possess a strong sense of urgency ability to deliver on ambitious milestones based on J&J’s ambitious growth plans. Strong problem solving skills are required. Apart from scientific leadership track records, he/she must also have an outstanding track record in team development, inspirational leadership, collaboration, and providing direction to the team in terms of motivating and enhancing their performances, even in times of ambiguity. It is important that the successful incumbent is able to demonstrate capabilities in managing talent including attracting, retaining and developing scientific talent and the ability to assign people into the right roles;

•Candidate must show capabilities in developing and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and strategic partners. In addition, he/she should also be able to establish rapport and credibility with peers, senior leadership and functional leaders in the local, regional and global platforms;

•A global mindset with experience working in a multi-national culture, successful incumbents must also be able to build collaboration and create an inclusive work environment where diverse styles, talent and ideas are sought. He/she would be expected to foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and commitment to making a difference for patients.
