The Director, Translational Medicine, Immunology Development, will be a leader in the Immunology Translational Medicine (ITM) team and primarily responsible for providing Translational Medicine support to the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Disease Area Stronghold (IBD DAS) within the Immunology Therapeutic Area. As a member of the IBD DAS, the successful candidate will be responsible for TM’s input into the IBD DAS strategic vision, for all IBD TM projects and trials, and would play a key role in external interactions with KOLs and other companies and in due diligence support. This work will include support for clinical and scientific aspects of primarily Phase 0-1 studies with occasional Phase 2 responsibility. In this capacity, the Director, ITM, will decisively contribute to advance the Immunology pipeline from pre-clinical stages to Proof-of-Mechanism (POM) and/or Proof-of-Concept (POC).

The position reports into the head of TM-Science group, one of two groups comprising the ITM department of the Immunology Therapeutic Area (ITA) of Janssen R&D (Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson). Organizationally, ITM resides in the Clinical Development organization of the ITA. The TM-Science group has an experimental medicine and disease area focus, while the second group, TM-Development, has a stronger operational and compound focus. Together, TM-Science and TM-Development provide the necessary scientific and clinical expertise to advance a world-class pipeline of small molecules and biologic agents to address unmet need in immune-mediated diseases. This position will play a ‘dual role’, contributing both scientific and experimental as well as clinical development expertise to ITM projects.

Roles of the ITM group include: Design and execution of compound-centric and disease-centric translational strategies; Design and execution of Phase 0-1 and occasionally Phase 2 Trials including Small and large molecules, alternative scaffolds, Early and late development (late development Phase 1 and experimental medicine) and Clinical Pharmacology; Contribution to innovation through participation in disease strategy team and through experimental medicine studies and Business Development, including due diligence activities.

Qualifications


A MD PhD, MD or PhD is required. Strong experience in the field of inflammatory bowel disease is required. Strong immunology scientific expertise is required. Clinical trial experience (industry preferred, or in academia) is required. A record of peer reviewed publication and experience in scientific presentations is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. He/she must have a working knowledge of the use of Microsoft suite of software products including Excel and Word. Less than 10% annual travel (some international).
