The Principal Embedded Software Engineer is considered a technical authority in the development and deployment of systems and technologies needed to bring new and innovative products to market. The Principal Software Engineer conceives of, plans, and implements solutions of considerable novelty, complexity, importance, and scope across medical device domain. The job requires extensive knowledge and practical experience in medical systems architecture/design, algorithm design and implementation, risk management, translating customer and business needs into designs as well as software architecture, design, coding, and testing techniques. Additional duties will include regularly mentoring and developing the knowledge base of other less seasoned technical professionals. He/She will stay abreast of new technology affecting the enterprise.

Actively lead software and systems Research & Development activites that support the development of new diabetes management and insulin delivery technologies, functional systems, and products. Deliver fully documented components and new platforms that require conceiving, developing the technology strategy, creating a resource plan, budget management, and implementing solutions of considerable novelty, complexity, importance, and scope. Requires broad cross-functional communication that may extend to other J&J operating companies. Lead the collection of complex design requirements starting with the voice of customer and translating customer needs into objective and meaningful lower level engineering requirements. Maintain responsibility for assignments to ensure that projects meet established commitments, that the finished product meets expected results and that the product was developed with high quality using the approved development process.

Work with the greater team to establish a technical direction for the department and roadmap for Insulin Delivery Devices. Develops and delivers technical presentations to internal stakeholders including budgets for projects in terms of cost and schedule and resources. Contributes directly to quality improvement processes including participation in leadership committees and working groups. Contributes to responding to internal and external audits including direct contact with auditors.

This position will be responsible for the primary interface between product development team and the legal team in areas of software and systems intellectual property landscape, invention disclosures, invention disclosure expansion and patent application filings. This position, in conjunction with the regulatory group, identifies regulatory requirements. Position requires proven success at leading on-shore and off-shore cross functional teams, developing complex medical devices from conception to final delivery.

Qualifications


A minimum of a BS in Software or Electrical Engineering or similar engineering discipline with 10+ years of relevant experience, or an MS degree with 8+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD with 6+ years of relevant experience is required. Proven success at leading the development of complex medical devices from initial concept through launch, as well as product sustaining activities is required. 6-10 years’ experience as a successful embedded software engineer is required. Knowledge of the design and implementation of different types of process control algorithms ranging in complexity, C/C++, configuration management, complex product release cycles and object oriented analysis and design is required. The best candidate has a passion for healthcare and for medical devices. Experience interfacing with US or international regulatory authorities and a strong knowledge of FDA Design Controls/ISO13485, system risk management and medical device system development experience is required. It is required to have a deep understanding of Software verification and validation techniques and translating customer needs into requirments and design. It is an asset to have experience in the application and use of software analysis modeling and design techniques. Strong knowledge and demonstrated successes in the development of complete medical/ healthcare systems including electronics, software and/or mechanical designs is preferred. Candidate must be able to weigh, document and articulate the strategic and tactical alternatives that deliver complete, reliable and high performing and safe systems that meet customers' needs. This position is based in Wayne, PA, and may require travel up to 20% both domestic and international.
