Description

The Principal Supplier Development Engineer will manage and maintain the technical qualification of suppliers and supplier processes, supervise the resolution of complex technical issues and lead supplier development team for designated commodity(s). The position provides technical leadership, project management and mentoring to engineers and team members with a strong emphasis on Lean and Six Sigma principles. It explores and manages technical innovation with a focus on plastic injection molding and related technologies needed to develop processes for the manufacture of medical devices. The position translates abstract project concepts or requirements into meaningful, actionable deliverables and plans.

The essential responsibilities include:
• Technical lead to manage large scale, complex multiple projects.
• Coordinate and lead the utilization internal/external resources to achieve project goals.
• Support of external suppliers through managing the qualification of supplier products and processes, analyzing and resolving supplier technical issues.
• Provide leadership and coaching as a team leader and within teams.
• Initiate and manage process excellence projects to improve quality, yields and value received from the supply base.
• Identify, Characterize and Document all key process variables included in Design Transfer.
• Provide direction in the development and implementation of data collection and repeatable process systems.
• Provide cross functional leadership in implementation and improvement of company process improvement efforts leading to superior business results.
• Lead, coach, instruct, and develop process owners and improvement teams in the definition, documentation, measurement, analysis, improvement and control of business processes.
• Gather, analyze, and present company performance data to identify opportunities for improvements related to key company objectives.

Other duties include:
• Partner with the new product development community to provide technology assessment and supplier technical support.
• Support new product development and other “product lifecycle” activities.
• Design and oversee experiments, apply statistical analyses to evaluate results, and prepare technical reports.
• Lead cross-functional teams in critical, complex projects of major impact on business unit sales and profitability.
• Support Operations management and engineering in leading tactical activities sustaining corporate initiatives and/or departmental objectives.
• Participate in technology and development of partnerships to develop internal competencies for supporting external product development.
• Act as a liaison between R&D, and Franchise Operations to ensure design changes are developed appropriately for a manufacturing environment.
• Lead or support troubleshooting activities, validations, and raw material/process improvements.
• Compile and evaluate test data to perform root cause analysis of raw material failures.
• Direct and participate in special projects as requested by Management.
• Decide technical direction and support of new, existing or modified manufacturing processes, including product scale-up.
• Qualify processes and assess technical capabilities for External Suppliers.
• Support production related issues for manufacturing. Support product development and sustaining engineering activities for Engineering. Partner with CMs to enhance the quality and effectiveness of suppliers. Support the product development process as appropriate.
• Guide and direct members of other departments in implementing improvement changes.
• Coach process leaders on developing appropriate leadership techniques to achieve goals.
• Heavy usage of Lean and Six Sigma to improve processes and coach others.
• Involvement in Process Improvement deployment across organizations.
• Leadership: Proven effectiveness at working directly with senior organizational leadership as well as front-line staff.
• Communication/Negotiation Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
• Ability to communicate with all levels of management.

• This role will involve approx 25% travel.

• This role will be located in Fremont, CA or Irvine, CA

Qualifications


Qualifications:

• A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or relative experience in plastic injection molding for the manufacture electronic devices.
• 10-15 years business experience with at least 10 years directly responsible for process improvement and/or quality.
• Must possess knowledge of working in Medical Device industry and demonstrated ability in leadership and project management.
• Accredited Lean and Six Sigma practitioner (Black Belt Certified).
• Define complex issues. Executes work that involves complex problems.
• Serve as the technical expert for supplier development engineering and assigned area of expertise, with conceptual knowledge of all technical functions and business areas.
• Drives innovation within functional area.
• Builds cross-functional and cross-departmental support, fostering overall group effectiveness.
• Ability to influence others to achieve business objectives.
• Strong technical writing skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, ability to fluently change priorities based upon business need.
• Familiarity with FDA regulated environment.
