The Principal Research Scientist is responsible for designing and executing research and development activities directed at the establishment and use of viral and non-viral gene therapy platforms, requiring in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art theories obtained from graduate level education and/or experience within a specialized scientific discipline. Individuals at this level are expected to apply their experience toward the solution of complex problems, to relate their own work to developments within the company and in the overall scientific/pharmaceutical community and to advance the projects of research and development activities within their functional area.

The Principal Research Scientist possesses in-depth knowledge in the field of viral and non-viral gene delivery technologies for gene therapy related to Biopharmaceutical R&D. Possesses ability to contribute to other areas outside area of expertise. Develops and implement projects of technically complex nature based on and understanding of stated objectives. Maintains a high level of awareness of recent developments within applicable fields and maintains state-of-the-art background in these areas.

The Principal Research Scientist will be required to contribute to designing strategies to utilize various viral and non-viral vector systems to deliver therapeutic genes in vivo. Assist junior level staff to address the job tasks, and review and interpret results to plan future research direction. Contacts can include VPs, Directors, and scientists in other departments. Routinely contacts scientific staff members of own department as well as scientists in other functional areas (e.g. Molecular Biology, Immunobiology) and individuals within other groups (e.g., Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Research) as projects require. Contacts technical consultants, program collaborators and professional organizations outside of company to find solutions to problems and manage projects. Expected to assist, mentor, and possibly supervise lower level scientists in complex laboratory techniques. Sets job priorities as directed by corporate needs and in conjunction with senior management. Need to be able to direct and supervise junior level staff so that they can effectively complete job tasks. As a manager, expected to effectively solve disruptive interpersonal conflicts within the group and interact effectively with those contacts necessary to perform job duties. S/he is responsible for maintaining and promoting a safe working environment by adhering to company safety policies. S/he is responsible for maintaining and promoting compliance requirements as needed for functions maintained within project group.

Qualifications


A Ph.D. in related scientific discipline or equivalent with 2-4 years of related pharmaceutical, academic, or related industry experience is required OR a Masters Degree in related scientific discipline or equivalent with 10+ years of related pharmaceutical, academic, or related industry experience is required . In depth technical expertise with various viral and non-viral gene delivery technologies, including AAV, and various nanoparticle/lipoparticle platforms is required. Advanced molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and cell biology techniques including: Protein expression in mammalian, DNA cloning; mRNA analysis through qPCR; SDS-PAGE and western blots; ELISAs, cell culture, immunohistochemistry/cytochemistry, and FACS is desired. A working knowledge and understanding of other viral platforms, including HSV and vaccinia is highly desirable. Candidates must have excellent record keeping, writing and communication skills, customer-oriented mind set, and project management experience. Candidate(s) should demonstrate multi-tasking skills and ability to work under timelines and in a matrix environment. There will be less than 10% travel. This position is based in Spring House, PA.
