The Communications and External Affairs Leader will effectively advance Johnson & Johnson’s reputation as a leader in innovation and be responsible for the strategic planning, development and implementation of effective, consistent and measureable communication plans to support the Johnson & Johnson innovation mandate, and for driving broad awareness of J&J as an innovation powerhouse. The candidate will help create the overall J&J enterprise level innovation narrative, weaving together the myriad elements of the J&J innovation mandate, its leadership in all aspects of innovation, including internal and external innovation, and aligning sector specific innovation narratives with the enterprise narrative. This will include the development of communications strategies, management of key strategic partnerships, and coordination of high visibility events, and media strategies targeted to multiple, diverse stakeholder groups. The role is global in scope and accountable for indirect influence and collaboration with business segments.
The Communications and External Affairs Leader will be responsible for the development, implementation, and management of comprehensive communication strategies, including a reputation campaign, digital strategies, storytelling, external presence in key forums, executive visibility on innovation and R&D, and other programs to shape the external environment on innovation. The individual will also be responsible for driving initiatives and programs focused on showcasing and highlighting science and technology prowess, R&D progress, success stories, collaboration, and scientific and R&D talent. The successful candidate will launch and manage comprehensive efforts to broaden awareness of J&J as a leading, innovative and productive R&D powerhouse bringing innovative, high quality healthcare solutions to the market.
Qualifications
A minimum of a Bachelor of Science (preferred) or Arts degree is required, and a Masters degree is preferred. A minimum of 15 years senior level experience in communication with a focus on enhancing the reputation of a science based organization is required. Experience across the range of communication disciplines with a particular focus on science is mandatory. She/He will have demonstrated skills in developing, managing, and delivering communications strategies and plans in a large, complex organization. Superior understanding and familiarity with new and emerging communications tools and channels, including digital channels is mandatory. Experience in managing staff/budgets and supervising agencies/freelancers is needed. Superior strategic thinking, negotiation, and collaboration skills with the ability to partner and lead teams through influence and complex matrix structures is needed. Problem solving and decision-making skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, good judgment, planning and analytical skills are required. The ideal candidate will possess intellectual curiosity, innovative thinking, and creativity. Executive level communications support experience is required.
