Role Summary
The Senior Counsel supports the VP of Law by providing business partners with proactive, strategic and practical legal advice in all areas of law, to anticipate and manage legal risk and to further key business objectives while protecting the company’s rights, interests and reputation. Working both individually and collaboratively with others in the legal department, the Director of Law will handle a variety of complex matters in the functional areas of: sales & marketing, regulatory affairs and drug safety, clinical trials and data generation, privacy and access to information, drug pricing and reimbursement, social/digital media and information technology, copyright, and employment.
Major Responsibilities
Providing strategic proactive and reactive legal advice on a wide range of proposed business initiatives and materials, in the functional areas of sales & marketing, regulatory affairs (including drug approvals, packaging and labelling) and drug safety, clinical trials and data generation, privacy and access to information, drug pricing and reimbursement, social/digital media and information technology, copyright, and employment
Negotiating and reviewing complex commercial agreements across the functional areas listed above
Developing and recommending policy and position on complex legal issues
Partnering with colleagues at Janssen as well as in the Johnson & Johnson Law Department, and outside counsel as appropriate, to support business objectives while ensuring compliance with legislation (including the U.S. FCPA), industry guidelines, healthcare compliance and other internal policies
Managing the company’s privacy program, processes, systems and training, to ensure compliance with applicable privacy laws
Assessing access-to-information and freedom-of-information requests and inquiries and responding to such inquiries
Developing and delivering legal training within the company
Creating and revising legal templates and effecting other process improvements within the legal department
Serving on project teams and committees to design, assess and/or implement special/significant projects in the local business and/or J&J Law Department
Qualifications
Relevant Knowledge and Experience
Member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada
5+ years of experience in private practice with a major law firm servicing pharmaceutical clients or in-house with a pharmaceutical company
Proven track record in providing sound legal and business advice on regulatory and clinical matters in the pharmaceutical sector
Technical Competency Requirements
Proven legal and business judgment and excellent strategic and analytical skills
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet stringent timelines, and handle multiple demands simultaneously
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team player
Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and ability to work with a wide range of people with varying degrees of legal exposure
Strong influencing skills
